Why People Don't Think For Themselves How to Renew a Failing Democracy edition by Claudia Chaves Politics Social Sciences eBooks

Why are voters so easily hoodwinked? Why so many vote against their own interests? What is it about human beings that corrupts even the systems and organizations designed with the best of intentions? Why don’t people or nations learn from experience, or from history? When is truth really relative, and when saying that is an excuse? What goes on inside people when they describe such different “realities” at the least conflict of interests? Does thinking for yourself make you happier, unhappier, or are there different kinds of happiness? Why did the US democracy turn into a plutocracy, again?
Why People Don't Think For Themselves How to Renew a Failing Democracy edition by Claudia Chaves Politics Social Sciences eBooks
How to think out of the box, from someone firmly inside one. The author makes astute observations, and writes multiple pages with intuitive clarity, then verges off course with slightly relevant side observations that are very distracting. As I began reading, I went from being intrigued, to bemused then finally annoyed by this book. The most interesting thing I observed was how the author goes to great length in describing how today's society, especially the Conservative USA society, are dogmatic, tribal to an extreme, regemented in the box thinkers, this from a self professed "Progressive" writer who throughout the book, demonstrates the very characteristics she is critical of in others. The book has value, many of the ideas are great and should be explored further, but the author may benefit from spending more time utilizing the "introspective" analysis that she recommends for others.Product details

Why People Don't Think For Themselves How to Renew a Failing Democracy edition by Claudia Chaves Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
With this book, Claudia Chavez has made a major contribution to
understanding how social change can be facilitated or
derailed by our internal processes. Thank you, Claudia.
Excellent in depth analysis. A treasure to understand how we think as humans!
This book has a few good points, but overall the author misses the fact that while she is talking about why people don't think for themselves, and she gives examples from her own life experience, pointing out how government agencies are resistant to change, the agencies she's worked in, by her own admission, were full of progressives. Yet, she constantly points to the Republicans as having a lot of flaws, while mentioning that the progressives have a few challenges but neglecting to notice that they have as many flaws as the Republicans, and that the progressives/Democrats tend to lie to their constituents as well. I read this book thinking she may give a fresh, unbiased insight into these current problems facing the USA, but instead, according to her, it's the Republicans fault. While the Republicans certainly deserve credit for the messes they've created, she isn't thinking for herself in this book, but repeating party line politics, which shows she has very little of her own thought. I was disappointed as I was expecting a fresh insight into a pressing problem in American politics and thought. On the thought side (outside of political discussions), a few good points were made. I would not recommend this book.
Thankfully, the U.S. never was a democracy. It's a Constitutional republic - a profoundly important distinction. Recommended reading The U.S. Constitution, The Federalist Papers, The Anti-Federalist Writings...
"The US is no longer a democracy"

a Princeton study has detailed what many of us have believed for many years.
Claudia Chaves, in this book, expertly illuminates the root causes for this change and the frustrating ability of charismatic leaders to garner support they don't deserve and drive nations and organizations into making detrimental decisions. By naming the specific mechanisms behind group-think an other human tendencies, this book gives us common language to catalyze a discussion on how we move towards effective change.
What a great title! I confess I had my own ideas about why people don't think for themselves and basically expected Ms.Chaves to confirm my opinions and justify my own thinking (which I like to think I do for myself). Plus, the cover is lovely and inspiring all by itself. What a pleasant surprise when this most entertaining and edifying book didn't go anywhere I expected it to. It is a delightful mix of erudite philosophy and entertaining observation. Nothing about it is complacent or predictable. This author has obviously given the subject a lot of independent, educated thought. She is a keen observer of human nature, but manages to remain optimistic that change is possible. More than that, she has come to some very challenging and enticing conclusions.
Why People Don't Think for Themselves is a question that has bothered author Chaves for her entire life. Drawing on her deep understanding as a psychotherapist, as well as her unique "outsider" status as an Argentine Jew in the U.S., Chavez applies her considerable intellect to analysis of this distressing question. Her solutions are fresh, grounded in political reality, and provide worthy fodder for discussion. Highly recommended for book clubs looking for a text the members can really sink their teeth into.
